May 1 - A Day of Action for Immigrant Rights

April 29th, 2007

May Day 2007 - A Day of Action for Immigrant Rights:

-Stop the Raids and Deportations
-Make D.C. a Sanctuary City
-Legalization for All Immigrants, Not a New Bracero Program

Tuesday, May 1st: 2pm-7pm
Malcolm X/Meridian Hill Park
16th and Euclid Sts, NW, Washington D.C.

Sponsors:
The D.C. Committee for Immigrant Rights, Mexicanos Sin Fronteras-D.C. Chapter, the Metro D.C. Interfaith Sanctuary Network, and the Latino Media Collective

Last Spring millions of immigrant workers along with their families, allies and supporters came out into the streets to protest in cities across the country. We protested the draconian and repressive Sensenbrenner bill passed in the US House of Representatives, and to demand a just and inclusive reform of immigration laws. The mass demonstrations were crucial to the defeat of the Sensenbrenner bill. Yet since then, there has been a vicious backlash. ICE raids of workplaces and communities, and the deportations that follow have spread fear and desperation in immigrant communities. In the spirit of the immigrant rights movement and the legacy of international workers day we are calling for a demonstration on May 1st. Please join us.

April 14 - Hate Crime Vigil for Ryan Keith Skipper

April 12th, 2007

Vigil for Ryan Keith Skipper
Saturday, April 14 at 6:30 pm
Dupont Circle - Washington, DC

A few weeks ago, 25-year-old Ryan Keith Skipper was viciously murdered and his body left on the side of a Florida road in an anti-gay hate crime.

Ryan’s murder was not an isolated incident, but rather the latest in an epidemic of anti-gay hate violence in Florida and around the nation. Anti-gay hate crimes are at their highest level ever in Florida, and second only to racist attacks in overall numbers.

Vigils are being held around the country on April 14 to mourn Ryan’s tragic death and spotlight the terrible impact of hate violence at the local, state and national level.

You can read more about Ryan and his murder on the Equality Florida website.

April 28 - Learn-a-Palooza

April 6th, 2007

The first Learn-a-Palooza is a day of free classes on various topics being held at locations throughout DC. Anyone can sign up on the Learn-a-Palooza website to teach a class, and there is a list of venues that are available to hold classes at. There are about 30 classes listed on their site so far, everything from how to fix a flat on your bike, to boxing basics, to understanding your camera.

This isn’t being billed as an “activist” event, but skill-sharing is definitely activism, even if not everybody realizes it! This seems like a good opportunity to share some of our radical skills with people in the community. Vegan cooking, anyone?

April 28 - Visions in Feminism Conference

We will explore ways to establish and maintain relationships with other activists and organizations so that we can be more effective as a movement in reaching our common goals. We will discuss ways to support, encourage, and learn from each other’s successes and challenges as we work towards social change and social justice.

All ages, races, genders, and experience welcome. Visit the Visions in Feminism Conference website for a schedule and more information.
