A Pre-Emptive Strike on Democracy
At a congressional hearing today, the Chief of Capitol Police suggested that there be a pre-emptive action against the demonstrations planned by the Anti Capitalist Convergence on September 27 2002. The Chief of Police has been spreading lies about the nature of the demonstrations and the actions planned. Thus far, the ACC has mainly planned and publicized marches, bike rides and anti-war leafleting and theater. Yet the ACC continues to be accused of planning violence. These are reckless and unfounded allegations. The DC police department is presently engaged in irresponsible fear mongering among a population that is rattled by economic uncertainty and the prospect of eminent war.
No one cares about the security of the people of this city and this globe more than the protestors participating in the People’s Strike and other protests during the weekend of September 27-29. And no one has made this nation and this world more dangerous than the policies of this government. Security to this administration means securing the oil interests in the Middle East at the cost of the lives of citizens of this country and of the world. Security to the people of this nation means healthcare, Medicare, retirement funds and living wages.
We will not sit by and let this administration go to war against Iraq, a nation that the US has already bombed to the stone age. A nation where the US government has killed more than 500,000 of its children through economic sanctions and then stated officially that "the price is worth it." This is the same government that is accusing us of being violent.
The tactics that Chief Gainer is proposing are a throw back to the red scare and anyone who cares about democracy should be outraged at this proposal. We are being told that we are engaged in an "endless war" and the implication is that we have to bear endless tyranny. All people of conscience should resist this state of affairs.
