IMF/World Bank Protests - Sept 2001 - Immigration Rights National Day of Action
Kick Off for Global Justice Week in Washington, DC
Show Your Solidarity!
We are at a crucial moment in the struggle for full labor and human rights for all undocumented immigrants who work and live in the USA. Following the announcement of Presidents Bush and Fox on the "regularization" of mexican immigrants, the Democratic Party is now moving to develop their own immigration reform proposal. This is the time FOR THE IMMIGRANT VOICES TO BE HEARD IN CONGRESS.
Thousands of immigrants from all over the country are calling to a National Day of Action for Legalization and Immigrant Rights in Washington DC on Tuesday September 25th, 2001. This action will kick off the Mobilization for Global Justice, a week of protests and demonstrations against the IMF and the WB, that will be meeting in D.C. around those days. Immigrants and supporters will visit with their Congress representatives to demand: (1) permanent residency for all the undocumented immigrants who have been working hard for years in the USA, paying taxes and not committing crimes; (2) the elimination of Operation Gatekeeper, the INS border enforcement policies that have dramatically increased the number of migrant deaths at the border. The immigrants demand this be replaced by a system that would secure basic rights and protections for future migration flows. (3) The elimination of "structural adjustment" programs imposed by the IMF and the WB to debtor countries and the immediate cancellation of the debt of all poor countries to these institutions. These two factors are known to have caused enormous dislocations in the economies of poor countries, including high unemployment, forcing millions of people to migrate to survive.
The Action includes the following events on Sept. 25th:
9:00am- 12:00pm Lobby
12:00-1:00 pm Human chain around congress
1:00 - 3:00 pm Rally in Upper Senate Park, Capitol Grounds.
4:00 - 5:00 pm Vigil
Dignity for Immigrants is Dignity for All
We invite you to donate a day of work to the cause of immigrants. JOIN US IN DC. Our Congress representatives need to hear from citizens and non-citizens alike that the respect and guarantee of basic rights for immigrants benefits all America, a nation of immigrants.
Hasta La Victoria!
