IMF/World Bank Protests - Sept 2001
The Anti-Capitalist Convergence was formed in the Spring of 2001 to organize the anti-capitalist coalition against the September 2001 meetings of the World Bank and IMF. The ACC worked with the other coalition planning protests, the Mobilization for Global Justice, and in early September it looked like our protest was going to rival Seattle's in 1999. Then 9/11 happened, the World Bank and IMF cancelled their meetings. and numerous organizations backed out of having any protests. Many people said that militant protest wasn't possible that soon after 9/11, but the Anti-Capitalist Convergence when ahead with modified plans. On Saturday, September 29th, we had a spirited, unpermitted march from a park near Union Station to the World Bank. This march of around 2000 people included confrontations with the police, but in the end it showed that resistance was still possible in the capitol of Empire during a time of rabid flag-waving. The People's Repo: September 21-24, 2001
...Taking back our homes, taking back our communities...
Days of Action, Action Training and Issue Workshops. The People's Repo is about people taking back what they need. A primary focus of the weekend will be on urban squatting; illustrating the correlation between gentrification, the stockpiles of abandoned buildings in many US cities, and increasing homelessness. Other focus ideas include: land struggles around the world, the role of the WB/IMF and WTO in global corporate control, the growing prison industrial complex, the criminalization of poverty and homelessness, rent strikes, and tenant rights issues.
