Anti-War Actions - January 2003
Anti-capitalist Call to Action for January 18th!
We don't want a regime change; we want and end to all regimes! The real war is waged everyday, receives little media coverage, and isn't the subject of countless marches and rallies by well meaning liberals: it's the war of the powerful against the weak, the north against the south, industrialism against the earth, humans against other animal, cold economic rationalism against life and freedom. We can't just oppose war on Iraq, we must work against the systems of capitalism and authority that make war necessary and inevitable.
Make a ruckus, make some noise. Drown out the cries for war with the beating heart of people's resistance. Let's join Positive Force, the Anti-Capitalist Convergence, Left Turn, and others in a percussion protest against war on Iraq. We will gather at Columbus Circle at 11:30 am, and then march to join the ANSWER march and rally near the Capitol. Bring buckets, whistles, drums, pots, pans, banners, signs, and flyers and anything else to make our message of resistance loud and clear. Liberation not War!
Call to Show Solidarity with the Persecuted Immigrants on January 18
On January 18, 2003, in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr., the "Bush is Taking the Shirts Off Our Backs to Pay for this War" Coalition, and the Progressive Muslim Network will be joining Positive Force's feeder march from Columbus Circle (see Call to Action below) to ANSWER's rally against the war on Iraq in a show of resistance to the US government's recent clampdown on immigrants.
We want to show resistance to the legacy of racism in the US, which began with the "discovery" of America by Columbus and is continuing today with racist policies against immigrants. We will be highlighting the INS's arrest and detention of hundreds of Muslim men and immigrants from Iran and Asia in California and around the country under a "Special Registration" program for men from 20 Middle Eastern Countries and Pakistan.
We will show our solidarity with immigrants, as well as our opposition to the racist registration laws by wearing armbands like the ones Jews and others persecuted by the Nazis were to wear during a similar "Special Registration" process in Germany during WWII. The bands will have the Islamic symbol of the star and crescent or a blue triangle with the word "Immigrant" (which immigrants were required to wear under Nazi Germany). We do recognize that, although Muslims have been the main target of this racist attack by the government, the detentions have also targeted immigrants of all stripes (Christian, Jewish and secular).
We ask that others make these armbands and wear them to alert people in this country to the dangerous path our government is taking in their preparation for another racist war.
